Assisted Living Communities in Southern California

When should I really react and place Mom or Dad into Assisted Living?

Are you wondering which crisis, fall or wandering episode will decide when Mom or Dad needs to move into an Assisted Living community?

Are you tired of having that knot in your stomach due to your endless worrying if your mom or dad is properly taking medications, eating right, keeping hydrated, showering, not letting in strangers….etc.?

The reality is – like many big milestones in life, we aren’t given a notice letting us know the time is right for assisted living!  A big light bulb starts to blink brightly, signaling ‘today is the day!’ yet we tend to ignore the signs, hoping that things will get better on their own, not wanting to ‘rock the boat’.  With the elderly, changes usually happen FAST, and one small incident (eg. a fall) can trigger numerous subsequent health issues, causing a rapid decline in their well-being.  The right Assisted Living community can wipe away these fears.

We advise families that if they are already “looking” for or thinking about assisted living, then chances are the signs are there, and in order to be safe and offer CHOICES, the time for moving to an assisted living is NOW.

Understanding today’s Assisted Living as a community in which to thrive, not a place to be forgotten…

The word today is “community”, not “facility”.  Today, Assisted Living offers so much for residents!  Yesterday, all we ever heard of was a nursing home or a convalescent facility to let your loved one live the rest of his or her days, usually in a depressing environment with a stale smell.  It is SO different now!  Many times we’ve heard families report back that their loved ones have said they wished they would have moved to the assisted living community a lot sooner!  The idea of being around one’s peers in a nice environment is uplifting and removes the idea that they are the only ones with their condition.  They can offer support to one another and keep each other going.  And social interaction is SO important to stave off depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline.

The key is to get in touch with the right, knowledgeable and compassionate organization (Jennifer Button and Anita Barnum at A Home Away From Home!) to assist you with gathering information on assisted living and other senior living options.  As soon as you take that first step…. and you visit communities, ask questions to both staff and residents, you will begin to gain a sense of relief that what you are doing for your loved one is the best choice for him or her.  As in anything we all dread, knowledge is key; knowledge is power!  You will learn so much on your first tour!  So many of your questions will be answered and your fears allayed ….. and this will make it easier to talk to other family members about the possibility and reality of transitioning your loved one to an assisted living.

We send you a list of appropriate Assisted Living communities and stay in contact with you until your loved one moves in!

We specialize in placing elderly folks in Assisted Living communities and Board and Care homes, both large and small, as well as in Alzheimer’s communities all over Southern California.  Whether you’re looking for a luxurious assisted living in Beverly Hills or Santa Monica, or a nice, comfortable board and care home in Torrance or Palos Verdes.  We work with families with ample budgets and many with not-so-ample budgets.  We’ve been doing this for a number of years – over 10 years now, and guess what – we’re not tired of it.  We enjoy sharing our very specific knowledge with you to turn this “burden” into an adventure in making mom, dad, Uncle Steve’s life a better life!  We visit the assisted livings, and other senior communities to which we refer families so we can better help you make the right decision.  We know who does not accept wheelchairs, who accepts pets, who has a secured area for residents with dementia, who accepts SSI…….etc. etc.  We know price ranges, locations, and atmosphere.  We ask clinical questions as well as questions on personality to provide you with good matches from which to choose.  Our goal is to make it easy for you to find the right place for mom or dad when it’s time for them to move to an assisted living community.   Our services and knowledge are completely free to you and yours as we are reimbursed by many communities to which we refer….THE TIME IS NOW!
